Walking Where They Walked

I visited Italy once before in the year 2000 with my sister Toni. We spent two weeks visiting churches, museums, ruins, the Vatican, markets, restaurants, and artisan shops in cities as far north as Venice and as far south as Naples. But unfortunately, we didn't make it to the birthplace of all four of our our grandparents, the island of Sicily.
Now, 25 years later, I am about to return to Italy with my husband, but this time to slow travel around the island of Sicily. Our goal isn't to go to all of the tourist attractions in 6 or 8 days like many people try to do. I want to spend time in the towns where my grandparents are from. I want to walk the streets where they walked. I want to shop in the markets where they bought fresh artichokes and fish straight from the docks. I want to have a fresh baked cornetto and a granita for breakfast at an outdoor cafe. I want to stroll down the streets and see what's around each corner. I want to enjoy il dolce far niente, the sweet doing nothing in the land of my ancestors. And I want to imagine their lives, their hardships, their dreams that led them to leave behind everything that they knew to seek a new life in a new place.

So the trip of a lifetime begins tomorrow as we leave our home in Oaxaca de Juárez, Mexico to spend two days in Mexico City. Then we will fly to Istanbul, Turkey to experience the sights, sounds, culture and foods that that incredible and very different city has to offer. And on April 13th, we finally make our way to Palermo, the capital of Sicily, where we have rented a small apartment and where we will spend Easter week and take Italian immersion classes.

I hope to use this blog share our adventures, our photos, and our discoveries during our weeks of travel with you, our friends and family. We hope you can enjoy this trip vicariously through us. And maybe we will inspire you to plan your own trip of a lifetime!
