Walking Where They Walked

I visited Italy once before in the year 2000 with my sister Toni. We spent two weeks visiting churches, museums, ruins, the Vatican, markets, restaurants, and artisan shops in cities as far north as Venice and as far south as Naples. But unfortunately, we didn't make it to the birthplace of all four of our our grandparents, the island of Sicily. Now, 25 years later, I am about to return to Italy with my husband, but this time to slow travel around the island of Sicily. Our goal isn't to go to all of the tourist attractions in 6 or 8 days like many people try to do. I want to spend time in the towns where my grandparents are from. I want to walk the streets where they walked. I want to shop in the markets where they bought fresh artichokes and fish straight from the docks. I want to have a fresh baked cornetto and a granita for breakfast at an outdoor cafe. I want to stroll down the streets and see what's around each corner.
